Mir Unique Solutions prioritizes Research and Development, and defines its vision and mission in line with this priority. It makes investments by believing that “only countries that improve their technology are independent”. Thus the first company of the Mir Unique, Dizayn Group commercialized its R&D operations regarding pipe technologies and became the flagship of the Mir Unique. And in 2007, the R&D department that was within the body of Dizayn Group moved to a technopark and evolved into an independent company. Developing unique technologies, investing in fields of technology and growing with know-how are main priorities of this Company.
Today, Mir Unique Solutions operates with its almost 60 full time R&D engineers and almost 30 part time academician researchers. Moreover the Company employs postgraduate and doctorate students as part time “Assistant R&D engineers”. Almost 10 suchresearchers take active roles in the projects. And the postgraduate and doctorate thesis of these researchers are also determined by the Company. Thus the subjects concerning the Company are studied. The quantitative size of such current projects supported by mechanisms like KAMAG, SANTEZ, TEYDEB, AB and SSM is almost 30,000,000 TL. By allocating 5% of the total turnover to R&D, it has a capacity that only few companies can reach. And this enables performing R&D operations in many different fields.
When R&D is needed regarding a strategically important field, a project team composed of experts from different disciplines is established. And this team plans the establishment of the required infrastructures and development of the required co-operations within the scope of the project. Moreover, the financing requirement for the project is included to the plan right from the start. Thanks to this established system, Mir Unique Solutions may adopt a holistic R&D approach instead of product development and/or incremental improvement mostly seen in Turkey. Thus all operations until commercialization are handled by Mir Unique Solutions
Performing R&D in this way has a huge added value potential. However, as it can be seen from the above given chart, unfortunately, Turkey has only few, if any, companies adopting this approach. And Mir Unique Solutions is among these few companies that manage this effectively thanks to the Technology Management System that it established.
Mir Unique Solutions cooperates both with subsidiary industries and surrounding universities and institutes in technology management. These partnerships that are good examples of open innovation are enabled through project-based efforts. The partners are seen as satellite resources around the main team and incorporated into the project team.
All operations of Mir Unique Solutions are executed in line with project management standards. At Mir Unique Solutions that performs its operations within the framework of its corporate Project Management Regulation, every project has a sponsor, a leader and a team. As seen above, project teams can come from many different sources. Within the company, “a balanced matrix organization” is established as shown below. Project leader defines the purpose, scope, budget, schedule, personnel and risk plans of the assigned subject, and carries out the regarding processes within the framework of the Project Management Plan prepared in line with PMI and APM standards following the approval of the Technology Board. “Stage/gate” approach is used to minimize the risk and uncertainties in the Project Management process, and “go/no go” decisions are taken at critical stages. And this enables the projects to be carried out healthily in line with the standards. On the other hand, thanks to the established Project Server, all projects can be tracked interactively and advanced control and monitoring analyses like “earned value” can be conducted. Senior management, project leader and project team can regularly enter data and receive reports. Thus the resources have the chance to update data, access files and receive reports regardless of their locations.
Another original structuring of the Mir Unique is the Technology Management Board. This board manages all the technological agenda, its decisions are applied without the need for secondary decisions and it is managed by the Chief of the Executive Board himself. Besides, Vice General Manager of Strategy, expert professors and R&D coordinators are also in this board.
All necessary decisions like forming technological strategies, tracking the critical processes of ongoing R&D projects, overlapping the projects with the strategies, direction and specification of critical investments and purchases are taken in this board. This board gathers every Wednesday, and makes a meeting from the morning to the late hours at night. These meetings have been held regularly since the foundation of the Mir Unique.
